The Purpose of Backsplashes
Backsplashes serve a functional purpose in your kitchen, but in 2019 fun backsplashes are the rage. By definition a backsplash is a vertical extension to a counter – typically kitchen or bathroom counter – which protects the wall from unintended splashes of water, protecting the wall from water damage. Generally consisting of tile, backsplashes are started directly behind sinks and can extend the entire length of the wall.
Backsplashes give you an easy way to put your personal style on your kitchen or bathroom. Tile is no longer a must have when it comes to wall protection – and neither is the standard placement. In 2019 we will see a lot more ceiling high backsplashes.
Here is a list of our favorite backsplash designs!
Sheet glass – This trendy backsplash prevents damage to the glass design element by having the back of the glass painted. By adhering the painted side to the wall, it is almost impossible to scratch.
Large tiles – Standard tiles (3”x6”) have been the norm for decades. But not anymore. More homeowners think bigger is better – and we agree. The larger the surface area of a tile, the easier it is to clean and replace if damaged. We recommend this style for smaller kitchens since they create an illusion of more space.
Slabs – Feel free to ditch the tile and individual pieces for one large sheet. Marble (or imitation marble) is gaining popularity, mainly because of its unique look. Continue the marble design from your countertop or choose a contrasting color. The possibilities are endless. The best part of this option is no more cleaning grout lines!
Heavy metal – Stainless steel, zinc, copper and aluminum backsplashes give your kitchen or bathroom a sleek, modern look. Whether you prefer a dull, muted metal or a shiny finish that pops, there is a metal out there for you. As we see more and more of the industrial design style, metallic backsplashes will continue to shine.
Shiplap – From shabby chic to country farmhouse, shiplap fits many popular design trends. Natural wood, stained, painted – shiplap will add texture and charm to any kitchen. Please note, shiplap may require more upkeep and may be more difficult to clean as wood grains vary.
